Kirsti, Sydney, NSW

Please note. The original memories were spoken in Finnish.

Kirsti speaks:

[...] …while in lower classes at high school, I had already been away for the first time, away alone – I took a language course in England during summer. So after that, it came to me that I want to go away again. This was when I was at high school in higher grades, maybe between the second and the third year; I wasn´t yet 18, I would be 18 later in the autumn. I went to the employment agency to whine about how to go abroad and they said, “There is no way”. No way, because I wasn´t yet 18. You have to be 18 to get anywhere. I kept saying, “There has to be a way”, and they kept saying, “No, no, no!” and “Has to be!” and “No, no, no!” Anyway, I went there lots of times to enquire and enquire, “There has to be some way to be able to go” and finally one of the officers said there is a sort of family au pair system in Germany. It is basically meant for 17-year-olds, and one basically becomes a part of that family with the family being responsible because you are a minor and so forth. And then she said only ten adolescents get to go per year from Finland and it is not only during the summer one can go but it is available throughout the year. Then she said, “But there is no point trying, because it is always the kids from Helsinki who get to go”. So it was very… like, forget the whole thing. I insisted, “I could try”, and she said, “Well, there is no point trying because you do not live in Helsinki; only the kids from Helsinki get to go”, but I insisted and argued and she finally gave in and said, “Well, send the application then.” I put the application in. I heard nothing for the year and at the end of May I thought, “It is not going to happen” and then… a week before… the week before the graduation I received a letter from a family in Germany. I was referred to them, and they asked when I could start. A week later I was there. I was really pleased and I went to tell the employment agency about it … They just went, “Oh my!” Ha ha ha, it was like I had this terrible need – there had to be some way, some way, some way to get to go. Isn´t that a typical mentality? “You will not succeed anyway…” [...]

Kirsti kertoo muistojaan suomeksi:
