Esa speaks:

We had indeed been dating, and then…. We probably started when I was 17 and you were 16, and… well, we had been going out for a while, and Tuula lived in Peräkylä in Teuva. And at the young people´s club in Perälä there was… they had bingo regularly– was it on Tuesday nights? Yeah. And then [for] people from Kauhajoki, there was a bus service to the bingo, and for me, it was six kilometres to the village centre. I took the bus – I wonder when the bus left? Maybe it was around 5.30, and I rode my bike to the village and then took the bingo bus. And then in the bingo bus, when it collected folks along the way…. They were older people, and they always kept wondering…. The bus went to Perälä and all the elderly [folk] went to the bingo and…

Tuula:

…to the clubhouse.

Esa:

…to the club house, and it was right next to Tuula´s place, so I always went straight to Tuula´s, and [then later] at night when the bingo was over and the bingo bus left, I went on the bus and… ha ha ha, and… so, so… and the old folks, they were really baffled, thinking, “What is that young bloke [doing]? He comes to bingo. He is never seen at bingo, and then he leaves with the others again.” But….

Tuula:

And one more special thing was that the old ladies always returned with coffee packets or some other winnings, but this boy returned waving two [empty] hands, ha ha ha…

Esa:

Yeah. Never won anything at bingo, and they were so curious, and I never said anything to them! Ha ha ha... I did not reveal to them that I had… ha ha ha.... It is easy to understand how it created a lot of curiosity, because I was totally different from everybody else, ha ha ha… in the bus. But I did get to date…

Tuula:

…Dating trips.


Esa:

Mmm... [I] got to go and see the loved one for the whole Tuesday night. Ha ha ha… didn´t have to pay anything! Which was really important for a student. And the bus driver, he never said anything to me.… Of course, the bingo organisers paid for… for the trips, so nobody paid anything…. They really wondered why I never won anything, but they didn´t know how much I won. Ha ha ha… You could really see that they were totally intrigued about what was going on.… [For] a couple of years, it went on…

Tuula:

Then you got your driver´s license.

Esa:
Less than two years, maybe one year [later].… When I got my license, the situation changed. [...]

Oltiin tosiaan seurusteltu ja tuota nin... me alotettiin vissiin, ku mä olin 17 ja sä olit 16 ja... tuota nin, sit ku oltiin jonkin aikaa seurusteltu, nin me sitte, kun Tuula asui Teuvalla Perälänkylässä ja Perälän nuorisoseuralla oli sitten, tuota nin... siellä pyöritettiin bingoa aina, olikohan se tiistai-iltaisin? Joo. Ja, ja sit ne oli, tuota, Kauhajoelta, sinne bingoon oli linja-autokuljetus ja mulla oli itellä kotoa sellanen kuus kilometriä Kauhajoen kirkolle. Mä menin sitte, tuota nin, koskahan se linja-auto lähti sinne? Oiskohan se lähteny joskus puoli kuuden maissa se ois lähteny, ni mä menin pyörällä kirkolle ja sieltä sitte bingoautoon ja bingoautossa, sitte ku se keräs porukkaa välillä matkalta niin sinnehän tuli sitten sellasta iäkkäämmän puoleista porukkaa sinne bingoautoon ja niitä kauheesti askarrutti aina... sittenhän se meni Perälään ja kaikki, tuota nin, vanhukset tuota meni bingoon ja —

Tuula:

Nuorisoseuralle.

Esa:

Nuorisoseuralle ja nuorisoseuran talo oli ihan Tuulan kodin naapurissa, nin tuota, mä menin sitte, tuota nin, Tuulan tykö ja sitte illalla, ku bingo oli ohi ja bingoauto lähti, ni mä menin sitte bingoautoon ja hah hah hah ja tuota.. niin niin... ja niitä vanhuksia sitte, niitä todella askarrutti se, että mikä tuo nuori poika on. Se tulee bingoon. Koskaan sitä ei bingossa näy ja sitte se taas lähtee pois, mutta tuota –

Tuula:

Ja mikä vielä oli erikoista, että mummelit tuli aina kahvipaketit tai jotkut muut voitot kädessä bingoautosta, mutta tää poika tuli kahta kättä heiluttaen hah hah hah...

Esa:

Joo. Ei koskaan voittanu bingoskaan mitään ja niitä hirveesti kiinnosti ja mä en koskaan puhunu mitään! Heh heh heh... Että mä en niinku paljastanu heille sitä, että mä hah hah hah... Niinku hyvin voi kuvitella, että se herätti valtavasti uteliaisuutta, ku mä olin täysin erilainen siinä heh heh heh... koko autossa. Mutta pääsipä sitä kattoon—



Tuula:

Riiausreissuja.

Esa:

Mmm... pääsipä sitä rakastansa kattomaan sitte tiistai-illan. Hah hah hah... eikä tarvinnu maksaa kyydistä! Mikä tietysti nuorelle koululaiselle oli erittäin tärkee asia. Eikä linja-autonkuljettaja, ei se mulle koskaan mitään siitä puhunu... että, että tietysti bingo maksoi niille... niille kyydit, että eihän niitä kukaan muukaan maksanut... Mutta tosiaan ne ihmetteli, että mä en voittanu bingossa mitään, mutta ne ei tienny kuinka paljo mä voitin. Hah hah hah... Näki selvästi, että niitä todella askarrutti, että mikä ihme tuossa nyt oikeen on... pari vuotta varmaan...

Tuula:

Sit sä sait kortinkin.

Esa:

Vajaa pari vuotta, ehkä vuoden verran... sit ku sain ajokortin, ni sitte tilanne muuttui. [...]
